FORMULATED FOR THE TOUGH WATERPROOFING JOBS

Cracks, blisters, open seams and fish mouths can be annoying roof trouble spots. So can edge, wall and protrusion flashings in new built-up roof construction. Each of these is an area where natural stress is created in the roof membrane for one reason or another. The stresses concen-trated in these areas can quickly destroy inferior patching materi-als, causing new damage or a reoccurrence of leaking. If not properly and quickly repaired such damage can expose the roof deck, insulation and building interior to expensive water damage.
Used before leaking occurs, Heavy Duty Patching Compound strengthens critical roof areas and helps prevent leaks from occurring. Used after leaks occur, Heavy Duty Patching Compound instantly and effectively seals
    and waterproofs the damaged area.

    SUPERIOR INGREDIENTS INSURE SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE

Heavy Duty Patching Compound has superior resistance to crack-ing, splitting and tearing because it stays flexible and pliable longer. Its outstanding perfor-mance is the direct result of quality ingredients and meticu-lous processing. SWEPCO’s own
“Heart of Texas” Asphalt® is the most important ingredient, a premium quality waterproofing asphalt especially selected and refined for superior flexibility, bondability and weatherability.
It is fortified with two highly effective SWEPCO chemical additives. ZHD-7TM, a special oxidation inhibitor which slows down the natural aging process, and ZonamineTM which helps insure the formation of a tight, strong, durable and uniform bond even under adverse condi-tions.
Thermal stability comes from not one, but three, superior stabiliz-ers, High Strength Micro Fibers, Dia-SealTM and finely milled blue-black slate.

IDEAL FOR A WIDE VARIETY OF ROOF APPLICATIONS IN BOTH NEW CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE

Heavy Duty Patching Compound is the ideal material for many types of new roof construction and roof maintenance. It works equally well on asphalt, ma-sonry, metal and wood surfaces. When used with Heavy Duty Patching Fabric for additional reinforcement it is excellent for sealing cracks, blisters, open seams, fish mouths and either new or deteriorated flashings at vents, skylights, pitch pans and other common trouble spots. It is also very effective for sealing metal seams, gravel guards, flashing flanges and for caulking small cracks, copings, counter flashings and drainage gutters.

    EASY TO APPLY

Heavy Duty Patching Compound’s smooth troweling consistency makes it easy to use. No thinning, heating or mixing is required. It can be applied by hand, with a large putty knife or trowel, leaving a smooth, water-proof surface.

    APPLICATION INFORMATION

IMPORTANT: Heavy Duty Patching Compound is a thick, black, heavy-bodied waterproofing compound, designed as an adhesive, sealer and filler for new roofing, roof repair and roof maintenance. In emergencies, Heavy Duty Patching Compound is exceptionally effective for repairs on wet surfaces. However, when making roof repairs of a permanent nature, do not roof on a wet or damp roof surface.
PREPARATION: The roof surface should be sound and should drain water freely. Because standing water accelerates deterioration of all asphalt roofing products, every effort should be made to isolate and correct the causes of any standing water or ponding on the roof. A minimum slope of 1/4 in per foot (2%) is recommended. When this is not possible, SWEPCO Products can still be applied and will provide temporary protection for such areas. However, it must be understood that performance of SWEPCO Products cannot be guaranteed in any area of the roof subject to standing water. The surface to be repaired must be thor-oughly cleaned free of all dust, dirt and loose debris. On gravel, granule or other aggregate covered asphalt surfaces, all embedded aggregate must be scraped or spudded off the area to be repaired and a minimum of 4 in. (10.16 cm) around the area to be repaired to create a smooth, bondable surface. On metal surfaces, surface impurities such as rust and corrosion should be removed by wire brushing.
APPLICATION: Heavy Duty Patching Compound is applied straight from the container with a plastic glove or a standard trowel. It requires no heating or thinning prior to application. In cold weather, it can be brought to applica-tion consistency by placing the con-tainer in a warm room for 72 hours prior to use. A caulking gun is in-cluded with cases of tubes. Complete instructions are printed on the tubes. Reinforcing flashings and deteriorated areas with Heavy Duty Patching Compound and Patching Fabric is a three-step process. First, trowel a layer of Heavy Duty Patching Compound over the area to be repaired. Second, embed a piece of Heavy Duty Patching Fabric in the appropriate width into
this layer of Heavy Duty Patching Compound. Third, trowel another layer of Heavy Duty Patching Com-pound over and beyond the Heavy Duty Patching Fabric on all sides. The width of Heavy Duty Patching Fabric required is determined by the type and
size of the repair. Instructions for some of the more common uses follow:
REPAIRING FLAT EDGE AND FLANGE TYPE PROTRUSION FLASH-INGS – Patching Compound and Fabric must extend a minimum of 4 in. (10.16 cm) beyond existing flashing materials or 4 in. (10.16 cm) beyond metal flange anchoring metal work, whichever is greater.
REPAIRING RAISED EDGE, WALL OR CURB TYPE PROTRUSION FLASH-INGS – Patching Compound and Fabric must extend well up under counter flashing and a minimum of 4 in (10.16 cm) beyond existing flashing materials or 4 in (10.16 cm) onto flat roof mem-brane, whichever is greater.
REPAIRING BLISTERS – Distorted roofing felts causing a blister or bulges should be cut out, being careful to remove only enough of the original roof membrane to create a flat, sound surface. Allow sufficient time for any water vapor or trapped moisture to evaporate thoroughly. Patching Compound and Fabric should overlap sound existing surface a minimum of 4 in. (10.16 cm) on all sides.
REPAIRING CRACKS, CUTS, TEARS AND OPEN SEAMS – Permit any entrapped vapor or moisture to evaporate before repairing the area. Patching Compound and Fabric should overlap sound existing surface a minimum of 3 in. (7.5 cm) on all sides.
SEALING JOINTS IN EXPOSED METAL ROOFS – Patching Compound and 6 in. (15.24 cm) wide Patching Fabric are usually sufficient for this application.
MINIMUM COVERAGE RATES: The amount of Heavy Duty Patching Compound required depends on the width of Heavy Duty Patching Fabric used:
When Using 6 in. (15.24 cm) Fabric
    ………………. 0.50 lb./lineal ft. ( .74 kg/m)
When Using 12 in. (30.48 cm) Fabric
    ……………… 1.00 lb./lineal ft. (1.49 kg/m)
When Using 36 in. (91.44 cm) Fabric
    ……………… 3.00 lb./lineal ft. (4.46 kg/m)
NOTE: These coverage rates are our minimum coverage rates. Do not under apply the product as this can adversely affect product performance and will negate any guarantee to which the product may be subject.
    APPLICATION INFORMATION:
CURING: The curing rate of Heavy Duty Patching Compound varies with temperature and humidity. However, it is normally completely cured within 60 to 90 days.
CLEAN-UP: Heavy Duty Patching Compound can be removed from tools and other areas with kerosene or mineral spirits.
STORAGE: Heavy Duty Patching Compound in bulk containers has an indefinite shelf life provided containers are kept tightly sealed and protected from high temperatures. In tubes, the shelf life is approximately one year.
